Tesfa (meaning “hope” in Amharic) is a documentary commissioned by Progetto Continenti, an Italian NGO involved in poverty alleviation programs in several countries, targeting its interventions to the most vulnerable groups of the population. In this case, we documented their activity in Southern Ethiopia.
This video represents a milestone for me as it is my last “charity-style” storytelling project. After Tesfa I totally changed the way we approach underserved communities and underprivileged people.
Tesfa did a good job in attempting to explain the activities of Progetto Continenti in Ethiopia and we did succeed at accomplishing all the planned goals, but it strongly reflects the fact that at that time I didn’t know much about the issues that affect underserved communities living in developing countries.
Today — after many years living and working side by side with these communities — I’ve learned that it is wrong to portray the “poors” as victims instead of as survivors as that results in images which are unable to capture the resourcefulness and resiliency of these communities.
